Sheridan Elementary School Addition
San Francisco Unified School District

This new addition to an existing school includes thirteen new classrooms, several small group-instruction rooms, an art and science workroom and a 400 - seat auditorium.

Hamilton + Aitken Architects designed the auditorium to support the school’s music curriculum as well as to allow public access for community-based performances, meetings and presentations. It is possible to secure this area of the school to facilitate separate community use. Placing the auditorium to slope along the natural grade of the site reduced construction costs.

The classrooms are arranged in two wings, oriented east-west, so that each classroom receives abundant north light as well as direct/ indirect lighting in which the majority of light is reflected from the ceiling, producing even-brightness without glare. The auditorium and all classrooms incorporate capabilities for Internet access, multi-media projection, and remote teaching and learning.
