Maritime Center Historic Rehabilitation
Richmond, CA

The Maritime Center was built in 1943 in Richmond as a childcare center for mothers working in the nearby Kaiser shipyards during World War II. Nominated for listing on the National Historic Registry, the Center will be converted into a joint use facility - a K-3 charter school and a site of the Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front Memorial National Historic Park. It will contain a preserved classroom that will be open for public tours as well as a National Park Service office.

This project is seeking LEED Silver Certification and incorporates many sustainable features such as daylighting, lighting controls, thermal comfort controls including operable windows, and the use of non-toxic materials throughout. Displays explaining LEED components such as bioswales and energy conservation measures will further enhance the educational environment.
