Lowell High School Modernization
San Francisco Unified School District

The bulk of the work at this nationally ranked academic high school involved campus-wide accessibility upgrades and fire and life safety improvements.  The scope encompassed nearly every aspect of the school buildings and grounds.  The hillside site was graded and landscaped to accommodate several strategic ramps, linking the classroom buildings to the sports facilities.  An entire segment of the 900-seat auditorium floor slab was replaced to allow fully accessible aisles and seating areas.

While designing modifications to counters, doorways, lockers and other support features, the designers were able to update areas of the buildings to enhance the educational program of various departments. New cabinetry, and functional plan changes enhance the administration wing, the science labs, and the library. A new theatre arts classroom with a thrust stage, lighting grid, sound booth and fixed seating for 75 was designed for the campus’ drama department.  H+A architects designed a pair of new Home and Visitor grandstands, each providing seating for 2000 fans, including access, parking and storage features.  And the gymnasium wings received new telescoping bleachers and new locker and shower room areas.
