Howard Street Apartments Renovation
San Francisco, CA
The Howard Street Apartments were built in 1906 and suffered the deferred maintenance of the south of Market neighborhood in its decline. Our client's goal was to maintain the apartments for its existing low-income population - upgrading building systems to ensure tenant safety and comfort, improving overall building appearance, and rehabbing individual units as they become available. A limited budget determined that we needed to define distinct areas of improvements.
In joint venture with Singer and Associates, we renovated one apartment to be totally accessible. SA / H+A incorporated a modest wheelchair lift with direct access to the sidewalk five feet below by way of a fenced and gated deck. Attention was given to details of hardware and appliance controls, knee space, and clearance to provide appealing, equitable - use housing.
