Renovation of a 1960's era tract home to a custom residence and art studio was a challenge on this hillside site. The addition of a clerestory and central exterior courtyard allowed the interior spaces to flow to the outdoors without sacrificing privacy on this heavily wooded property.

The existing house was extended along the axis of the new clerestory to provide additional living space and to emphasize the dramatic view of San Francisco Bay. The completed residence is the home of an extended multi-generational family, which provides a separate unit for an elderly parent along with a communal art studio. The gate shown defines the entry from the street above and echoes the design of the clerestory roof.
